Walks in Wales

Wales has beautiful, diverse nature. You can take long walks along the rugged coasts, but you can also go on great forest walks, climb mountains, and so on. As the weather is often rainy, it is advisable to be well prepared to set off. That means: a mackintosh that can withstand heavy rain, layers of clothes for when it is too hot or too cold, sturdy walking shoes and a walking stick. Especially in winter, but also in summer, rain can make it slippery.

On many walks, you have to pass through stretches of meadows where wildlife roams freely. So always remember to bring both a short and long lead for your dog, because you don’t want your dog chasing livestock!

Snowdonia National Park

Fairy Glen Gorge

If you are looking for a nice hike in Snowdonia National Park, this hike is well worth it. The trails are well trodden except for the first bit where you have to descend a natural staircase. Don’t let your dog off the first stretch, as it seems closed off, but there is an opening to the public road. The best part of the hike is the Fairy Glen. For this you pay 1 pound per person. This is well controlled, so make sure you have cash in your pocket 🙂 You walk a round where you can take a detour halfway through this round to the gorge. This is again a natural staircase that can sometimes be difficult to walk on if it has rained a lot. However, the view below is well worth it.

After the walk, it is nice to drive to the town of Betws-y-coed. This is five minutes away from the walk. This quaint town is extremely dog-friendly. There is even an invitation for dogs on the door of the little church. You can grab some food or a hot drink here to recover from the hike.

Afon Cwm Llan Waterfalls

If you want to hike in Snowdonia National Park on a rainy day, the hike to the Afon Cwm Llan Waterfalls is a must. The trail is very walkable and you feel like you are in the middle of nature. If you are a dare devil you can also climb all the way up, but on a rainy day it can be very slippery.
