Kutná Hora

Prague is a great city where you can definitely enjoy yourself for several days, but if you also feel like visiting some other nice places during your trip to Prague, Kutná Hora is the place to be!

Nestled in the heart of the Czech Republic, Kutná Hora is a town steeped in rich history and adorned with stunning medieval architecture. Located approximately 70 kilometers east of Prague, this UNESCO World Heritage site attracts visitors from around the globe with its unique blend of Gothic charm and historical significance.

Kutná Hora rose to prominence in the Middle Ages due to its prosperous silver mining industry, which fueled the wealth of the Kingdom of Bohemia. The town became a major economic and cultural center during this period, rivaling Prague in importance. The legacy of its silver mining days is preserved in the impressive Gothic architecture and the historic Kutná Hora Mint, where coins were once produced.

One of the town’s most iconic landmarks is the St. Barbara’s Church, a magnificent Gothic cathedral dedicated to the patron saint of miners. This awe-inspiring structure features intricate vaulted ceilings, ornate stained glass windows, and a striking exterior adorned with flying buttresses and spires. It stands as a testament to the town’s prosperous past and architectural prowess.

Another notable site is the Sedlec Ossuary, also known as the Bone Church. This macabre yet fascinating chapel is adorned with the bones of an estimated 40,000 to 70,000 human skeletons, arranged into intricate decorations and furnishings. It serves as a haunting reminder of mortality and has become an eerie attraction for visitors intrigued by its morbid beauty.

The Sedlec Ossuary is a bit outside the city centre. You can book tickets online and this is advisable to do if you go in high season. No photographs may be taken in the chapel.  Sadly, dogs are not allowed inside, so you will have to take turns.

Furthermore, it is fun to walk through the beautiful streets of Kutná Hora and there are several cafés where dogs are also allowed.
